Current and Recent Projects

1. Remote Controlled Robotic Descale Manipulator

... is a remote operated HPW manipulator arm for removal of bauxite scale from alumina tanks. The tool is remotely operated with a high pressure water jet on the end of an extendable and rotating arm. This water cutter removes scale (solidified bauxite by-products) that collect on the inside of the 10m high settling tanks. The tool is lowered in through an access hole in the top of the tank where it is then operated remotely to remove the scale from inside the tank. During this process rocks of up to one ton are cut off the roof of the tank. The tool is fitted with one stationary and two pan and tilt cameras (each with an air-knife) to allow the operator optimal viewing and perspective during operation. Previously scaffolding needed to be erected inside the tank with a crew using jackhammers inside removing the scale.

2. Remote Controlled Valve Operating Tool

... is designed and used to operate and grind valves in an alumina refinery. The valves are situated 9 metres above the ground. The valve operating tool is able to open/close the valves and "grind", whereby it removes the scale from the seats of the valves. The refinery has 400 of these valves, which were previously operated with a sledgehammer.

3. Diver Drill Rig

... is designed as a diver operated coupon drilling rig for use on Woodside's Rankin A caisson legs. The brief provided required a diver operated tool that was able to collect coupon samples from different thickness plate on the legs, removed the coupons for testing,

4. Hydraulic Operated HPW Cutting Tool

... designed for use on offshore Oil and Gas structures for cold cutting through up to 40mm steel plate in a single pass. The tool can be set up for a variety of cutting operations, improving accuracy, efficiency and safety by both removing the hot work and the human presence. Furthermore the tracks designed for moving the tool produced very clean accurate cuts in a variety of work situations.

5. Discharge Header Removal Tool

... from the conceptual design, engineering and manufacture of tools for removing and transporting valves in an alumina refinery from constricted spaces to an area accessible for crane lifting. The valves had to be moved over uneven ground but be kept level at all times. The valves varied up to 10 Tonne in capacity.

6. Subsea Miniaturised Winch

... from conceptual mechanical design, procurement of components, engineering, manufacture and assembly of the winch and frame. The design required the winch to reel a specialised small diameter cable with a level wind assembly, the overall size of the winch assembly and frame was restricted given its intended deployment method through a submarine torpedo tube. Ocean Industries provided the mechanical engineering input into the winch system and the sub-surface housings.
